The Saigon River has seen its pollution increasing at an alarming rate over the past yearPollution in the Saigon River, Ho Chi Minh City’s prime water source, has increased at an alarming rate over the past year as more industrial waste is pumped into the waterway, experts have warned. The number of microbes in the Saigon River water is now about five times what it was a year ago and the presence of other contaminants has also increased.
Tan Hiep Waterworks, which treats and purifies water for HCMC’s domestic consumption, takes about 300,000 cubic meters of water from the 200-kilometer-long Saigon River every day.
Local experts have warned that contaminants in the river, including microbes and chemicals such as manganese and ammonia were dangerously exceeding acceptable standards.
Recent testing by the experts found 23,000 to 240,000 microbes per 100 milliliters (ml) of Saigon River water.
According to Vietnamese standards, water with up to 5,000 microbes/100 ml is acceptable for living activities, while the standard for irrigation and seafood cultivation is 10,000 microbes/100 ml.
Tests of Saigon River water undertaken last year found a microbe rate of 4,300 to 46,000/100 ml of water.
The latest tests found ammonia levels were 40 times higher than the averaged 2005 and 2006 levels, while manganese levels were four times higher.
Culprits fingered
A report from the HCMC Department of Traffic and Public Works found the Tan Quy and Tan Phu Trung industrial parks in Cu Chi District were the main "culprits" of the contamination.
Neither industrial parks had waste water treatment systems and so all their waste was dumped untreated into the Saigon River, the report said.
Newly-built industrial developments in Binh Duong Province pump industrial waste into the Thi Tinh River, which feeds into the Saigon River.
The Thi Tinh River also receives untreated waste water from the town of Thu Dau Mot.
Every day HCMC households and companies dump about 237 tons of waste and unprocessed toxic substances into Saigon River, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
The Department of Traffic and Public Works proposed the three regions through which the Saigon River flows - HCMC, Binh Duong and Tay Ninh provinces - should take responsibility for the contamination of the waterway.
The department said all domestic and industrial waste should be treated before being pumped into the river.
It also recommended hefty penalties for those caught contaminating the river, including suspension from business.
