Chinese pig and cow entrailsVietNamNet Bridge – Low quality chicken, chicken legs, and entrails of pigs, cows and goats preserved by toxic chemicals are illegally imported into Vietnam through the border province of Lang Son.
These are second-grade products, which Chinese people never eat, but are used in delicious cuisine at restaurants in Vietnam. Grilled chicken legs, boiled pig entrails and grilled goat brisket are now most popular amongst Hanoians.
These things are of low quality and worse, preserved by toxic substances. A trader said tainted chicken legs and entrails are submerged in various chemicals to make them look fresh. Chefs at restaurants only need to mix these things with spices to make them tasty.
Second-grade chickens, which are not quarantined, are also illegally imported through the border province of Lang Son. This kind of chicken is very cheap, around VND25,000-30,000kg and sold for VND55-60,000 at markets.
Bai Gianh in Lang Son is familiar to all chicken and entrails smugglers. Nearly 1km from the Huu Nghi border-gate, Bai Gianh is where porters convene to enter China and take chickens and entrails at night.
Though the local police agency has set checkpoints to prevent the inflow of Chinese animal products, tons are still being sold at markets each day. And at market, nobody can distinguish between these toxic, tainted products and fresh ones.
In 2007, the trafficking policy agency seized 170 tons of smuggled chickens, entrails and over 22,000 living chickens and nearly 60,000 eggs. A senior policeman said this is an unremarkable volume because traffic policemen only inspect suspicious trucks and these products can be transported by motorbikes, coaches, etc.

VietNamNet Bridge – Doctors have reported deaths caused by improperly wearing helmets. This is attributable to Vietnam not having standards on how helmets are worn, mostly because this is a new issue and it depends on helmet producers’ design.
Doctors at the Hanoi-based Vietnam – Germany Hospital reported traffic accidents in which the victims died or were paralyzed because they fastened neck straps incorrectly.
Dr. Dong Van Hue from the Vietnam-Germany Hospital warned that fastening straps incorrectly might cause trachea and gullet injuries, as well as the cutting of the carotid artery when riders drive their motorbikes at high speeds. He said motorbike drivers should wear their helmets correctly and need to tightly fasten chin straps. However, several helmet types don’t have the rubber pads that secure helmets to the chin, so users have to fasten straps under their neck.
Nguyen Manh Am, Director of the Standards and Quality Measurement Agency No. 1, said there is no document saying fastening straps on the neck can more easily cause injuries than under the chin, and vice versa. He suggested research to that end.
In Vietnam, straps are tested for elasticity only. Le Dinh Tung from the Scientific Services and Consulting Company under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said in western countries, motorbike drivers often fasten straps under their neck because the strap is wide and soft, and Vietnam should pay attention to this factor.
Pho Duc Son, Deputy Director of the Standards and Quality Center, where helmet standards are set, said this is the first time he heard that fastening straps under the neck may cause injuries. He said the center will collect more information about this. If there is scientific evidence, the center will change their helmet standards.
The information also surprised helmet producers. When asked “Is the Amoro helmet strap fastened under the chin or neck?” Nguyen Thanh Binh, Assistant Director of Amoro Vietnam Co, Ltd said: “Our company hasn’t considered this issue yet. It is too new. We will research and seek information.” He also said that Amoro hasn’t received questions from customers about how to wear their helmets.
Protect helmets have a strap that fastens under the neck. Hoang Anh, Marketing Manager of Protect Vietnam, said they have made contact with the design and testing division in the US to check whether fastening the strap under the neck is correct or not, and the company will work with doctors to re-check cases where victims died from helmet strap related injuries. The firm will change the design if need be.
While Vietnam has yet to develop helmet wearing standards, managers urged users to perform the following instructions: if the strap has a rubber pad, it must be fastened under the chin; otherwise it should be fastened under the neck. Wherever the strap is fastened, it must be tight and secure.
