Based in part on his Ph.D. His treatment of the repression of the 1930/1 uprisings raises the questions whether it was the paramilitary Garde indigene, rather than Indochinese soldiers, who were more useful in terms of repressing disruption of the colonial peace. (At least during the post-Great War period; in the conquest and pacification periods, however, French/European/African soldiers acted often acted in combination with Indochinese units as well as the Garde indigene.)
11. Dang Van Long, Nguoi viet o Phap, 1940-1954 (Les Vietnamiens en France, 1940-1954). (Circa 1999, by the late Dang Van Long, who died about one and a half years ago.) (On the soldier-workers, or Main d^ÒOeuvre Indigene of WWII)

15. On mutinies (though not by soldiers), cf Peter Zinoman's article in Modern Asian Studies (?) on the Thai Nguyen Rebellion of 1917. It is also featured in his price-winning book The Colonial Bastille (University of California Press, 2000).
