Perfect grades weren’t enough to keep Diane Tran out of trouble with school administrators or with the law. The 17-year-old Vietnamese-American traded her classroom for a jail cell last week after a Texas judge found her guilty of truancy, local TV station KHOU has reported.
But Tran, a straight-A junior taking classes for college credit, wasn’t exactly playing hooky from Willis High School. She said she worked two jobs to support a younger sister and an older brother at Texas A&M University, often leaving her too exhausted to get to school in time for roll call, or at all. The siblings don’t live with their parents, who had divorced and moved.
But Judge Lanny Moriarty, in maintaining Montgomery’s tough-on-truancy policy, admitted he wanted to make an example of Tran, who also must pay a US$100 fine.
After Tran’s previous absences, the judge had warned her not to miss school again. When she did – for a total of 18 days – Moriarty had her summoned and then handcuffed in court. He did not pursue contempt of court charges, though she ignored his initial warning.
Texas law requires that a school file a complaint against students in court or refer them to juvenile court if they miss 10 or more days of school in a six-month period, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Devant des pétitions venant de tous les états et de l'étranger ,le juge est revenu sur sa décision.
